Survivorship Bias

In today's digital age, social media platforms have become a ubiquitous part of our lives, particularly for artists looking to showcase their work and connect with an audience. However, the glittering success stories that dominate our social media feeds often hide a less-discussed phenomenon called survivorship bias. Understanding this bias is essential for artists and anyone navigating the world of social media, as it can significantly impact their perception of success and hinder their creative journey.

What is Survivorship Bias?

Survivorship bias is a cognitive bias that occurs when we focus on the individuals or stories that have "survived" a particular process while ignoring those that did not. In the context of social media and artistic pursuits, this bias leads us to primarily see and celebrate the artists who have achieved tremendous success, while overlooking the struggles and failures of many others who haven't.

The Social Media Illusion

Social media platforms are tailor-made for showcasing success. We see artists posting their latest works, attending prestigious events, and accumulating thousands or even millions of followers. This curated image of success can create the illusion that everyone is winning except us, fostering feelings of inadequacy and discouragement.

It's essential to remember that social media is a highlight reel, not the full story. Survivorship bias skews our perception by showcasing only the success stories, often omitting the countless artists who are still in the process of growth or struggling to gain recognition. Here's how survivorship bias affects artists and social media users:

Comparative Despair: Artists may feel like they are falling behind or not measuring up when they compare themselves to the highly visible success stories on social media.

Unrealistic Expectations: Survivorship bias can lead to unrealistic expectations about how quickly one should achieve success. This can be discouraging for those who are just starting their artistic journey or facing creative roadblocks.

Impatience: Artists may become impatient and rush their creative process, hoping for instant success like the few they see online. This can hinder their growth and artistic development.

Breaking Free from Survivorship Bias

To combat survivorship bias and its negative effects, artists and social media users can adopt the following strategies:

Acknowledge the Bias: Recognize that social media platforms often showcase a skewed version of reality and that many artists face challenges and setbacks on their journey.

Practice Gratitude: Focus on your own progress and the small victories along the way. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how minor they may seem.

Seek Out Diverse Perspectives: Expand your social media feed to follow artists at various stages of their careers, not just the superstars. Hearing about different journeys can provide a more balanced perspective.

Embrace Failure: Understand that failure is an integral part of growth and success. Learning from mistakes and setbacks can lead to personal and artistic development.

Set Realistic Goals: Instead of chasing overnight success, set achievable goals and milestones for your artistic journey. Success often comes with time and persistence.

Connect with a Supportive Community: Join online and offline communities of artists who can provide encouragement, advice, and a sense of belonging.

Focus on the Process: Concentrate on the joy and satisfaction you derive from your art rather than the external validation of social media metrics.

Survivorship bias can be a significant hurdle for artists and social media users, leading to feelings of inadequacy and discouragement. By recognizing the bias, embracing a growth mindset, and taking practical steps to maintain a balanced perspective, artists can navigate the world of social media more effectively. Remember that success is a journey, and it's the process of creating art that truly matters. Don't let survivorship bias rob you of the joy of your creative endeavors.

Spending Christmas alone: A Guide

Can be a unique opportunity to enjoy some personal time and create your own traditions. Here's a guide to making the most of it:

Plan Your Day: Decide how you want to spend the day. You could relax, read a book, watch movies, or engage in a hobby. Having a plan will help you look forward to the day.

Indulge in Your Favorite Foods: Cook your favorite meal or order in from a restaurant you love. Enjoying foods you love can be a great comfort and pleasure.

Connect Virtually: If you're feeling social, arrange video calls with friends or family. It's a way to be with loved ones without physically being there.

Treat Yourself: Whether it's a long bath, an indulgent dessert, or a new book, find ways to pamper yourself.

Reflect and Set Goals: Use this time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the new one. It can be a peaceful and productive way to spend some time.

Get Outside: If possible, go for a walk or engage in some outdoor activity. Fresh air and a change of scenery can be uplifting.

Volunteer: If you're looking to feel connected and purposeful, consider volunteering at a local charity or organization.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere: Light candles, play soft music, or put up some simple decorations to make your space feel festive.

Practice Gratitude: Write down things you're thankful for. Focusing on positive aspects can improve your mood and outlook.

Remember It's Just One Day: If you're feeling down about spending Christmas alone, remember that it's just one day and it doesn't define your holiday season or your life.

Remember, spending Christmas alone can be a peaceful, rejuvenating experience if approached with the right mindset.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)

Has issued a new Accounting Standards Update (Update) to enhance how companies account for and disclose information about crypto assets. This Update is important for several reasons:

Improving Crypto Asset Accounting: Currently, companies treat crypto assets as indefinite-lived intangible assets under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This means they record them at cost and only recognize a loss in value if there's an impairment (a drop in the asset's recoverable amount). However, they don't adjust for increases in value until the asset is sold. This method doesn't provide a complete picture of the asset's true value or the company's financial position, as it only reflects decreases in value.

Stakeholder Feedback: The FASB's decision is based on feedback from various stakeholders, including responses to a 2021 Invitation to Comment. Stakeholders emphasized the need for better accounting and disclosure practices for crypto assets.

Fair Value Measurement: The Update proposes that crypto assets should be measured at their fair value. Fair value is a more dynamic and current valuation method, reflecting both increases and decreases in value in the financial statements. This approach gives a clearer and more accurate picture of a company's financial position and the actual worth of its crypto assets.

Scope and Applicability: The Update applies to all entities holding crypto assets that meet specific criteria, such as being intangible, residing on a blockchain, being secured by cryptography, being fungible, and not being created or issued by the reporting entity or its related parties.

Disclosure Requirements: The Update includes new disclosure requirements. Companies must provide detailed information about their crypto assets, such as the name, cost basis, fair value, number of units for each significant holding, and aggregate values. They must also disclose information about restrictions on sales, methods for determining cost basis, and a rollforward of crypto asset activities including gains, losses, additions, and disposals.

Differences from Current GAAP: Under the current GAAP, the treatment of crypto assets as indefinite-lived intangible assets has limitations. The new Update changes this by requiring fair value measurement and more comprehensive disclosures. This alignment with fair value measurement is consistent with the accounting practices for entities in certain industries, like investment companies.

Benefits: This Update aims to reduce the complexity and cost associated with the current accounting model. By moving to a fair value measurement, it also better reflects the economic realities of holding crypto assets.

In summary, the FASB's Update is a significant shift towards more transparent, accurate, and comprehensive accounting and reporting of crypto assets, aiming to provide better information for investors and other users of financial statements.
