"The Courage to Be Disliked"
is a book written by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. It presents a conversation between a philosopher and a young man as they explore the concepts of Alfred Adler's psychology. Adler was a contemporary of Freud and Jung but took a more holistic approach to understanding individuals within their social contexts.
The book's title reflects a key aspect of Adlerian psychology: the idea that to live fully, one must sometimes risk being disliked, as trying to please everyone can lead to a loss of self and hinder personal growth. The narrative unfolds over five nights of conversations, each exploring different facets of Adler's theories and how they apply to daily living.
Core concepts discussed in the book
Night One: Denial of Trauma
Trauma is Not an Excuse: Adler believed that while traumatic experiences are real, using them as an excuse for one's current behavior is self-defeating.
Separation of Tasks: Differentiating between one's own tasks and the tasks of others is crucial to avoid unnecessary interference and to focus on what one can control.
Night Two: All Problems Are Interpersonal Relationship Problems
Interpersonal Relationships: Adler posited that all problems are ultimately related to our relationships with others.
Feeling of Community: A sense of community and contribution to the well-being of others is essential for personal growth.
Night Three: Discard Other People's Tasks
Life Tasks: Adler identified work, friendship, and love as the three important tasks in life, and he emphasized managing them without intruding on others' responsibilities.
Freedom and Responsibility: We are free to choose our responses to circumstances but must also take responsibility for those choices.
Night Four: Where the Center of the World Is
Subjective Reality: Adlerian psychology suggests that we all live in our own subjective realities, created by our own perspectives and interpretations.
Change Yourself, Not Others: Since we cannot control others, we must focus on changing ourselves and our responses.
Night Five: To Live in Earnest in the Here and Now
Contribution to Others: Life is about contributing to the community, and happiness is found in the act of contribution, not in being the center of attention.
The Courage to Be Happy: It takes courage to live according to one's own principles and to be happy in a way that might not align with others' expectations.
Overarching Themes
Self-Acceptance: Accepting oneself is key to personal freedom and change.
Non-Competitiveness: Life is not a competition; one can be happy without comparing oneself to others.
Personal Responsibility: Each person is responsible for their own life and decisions.
Community Feeling: The well-being of the community enhances personal well-being.
The Courage to Be Disliked: The title theme underscores the importance of being true to oneself even if it means risking social disapproval.
A blend of philosophical discussion and practical psychology. This book encourages readers to challenge their preconceived notions and to lead lives that are authentic and free from the constraints of social expectations. Its format as a dialogue makes complex ideas accessible and engaging, offering a distinctive take on how to achieve personal happiness and fulfillment.
The Rule of Threes
is often used in survival situations to prioritize needs. It outlines a general pattern of what the human body can typically endure and helps one remember the order in which to address survival challenges. Here's how it usually breaks down:
3 minutes without air: The human brain begins to suffer irreversible damage after approximately three minutes without oxygen.
3 hours without shelter: In extreme conditions (e.g., extreme cold or heat), the body can only survive for about three hours without proper shelter or regulation of body temperature.
3 days without water: A person can survive for about three days without water, depending on the individual and the conditions.
3 weeks without food: Food can be foregone for about three weeks, assuming that a person has water and is not expending extreme amounts of energy.
It's important to note that these figures are rough estimates and can vary widely based on an individual's health, the environment, and many other factors. However, the Rule of Threes is a guideline for understanding the relative importance and urgency of survival needs.
