SMART Goals
Your Guide to Effective Goal Setting
What Are SMART Goals?
SMART goals turn general intentions into clear, actionable objectives. By ensuring your goals meet all the criteria of the SMART acronym, you're setting yourself up for clearer direction, motivation, and a higher chance of success.
Breakdown of the SMART Acronym:
Specific (S)
What it means: Goals should be straightforward and emphasize what you want to happen.
Ask Yourself:
What do I want to accomplish?
Why is this goal important?
Who is involved?
Example: Instead of "I want to get fit," say "I want to run a 5K race."
Measurable (M)
What it means: There should be a way to track your progress and know when the goal is accomplished.
Ask Yourself:
How much or how many?
How will I know when my goal is accomplished?
Example: Instead of "I want to read more," say "I want to read 12 books this year."
Achievable (A)
What it means: While goals should push you, they should also be possible to achieve with effort.
Ask Yourself:
How can I accomplish this goal?
Is this possible given my current resources and constraints?
Example: Setting a goal to travel to Mars next year might not be achievable, but saving up for a special vacation could be.
Relevant (R)
What it means: The goal should be meaningful to you and align with other relevant objectives.
Ask Yourself:
Does this seem worthwhile?
Is this the right time?
Example: If you're a writer, setting a goal to improve your typing speed might be more relevant than learning to play a new instrument.
Time-Bound (T)
What it means: Setting a deadline ensures a sense of urgency and clarity about the timeframe.
Ask Yourself:
By when do I want to achieve this goal?
Example: Instead of "I want to learn Spanish," say "I want to be conversational in Spanish by December."
Why Use SMART Goals?
Clarity: They provide clear direction, so you know exactly what to focus on.
Motivation: Achievable and time-bound goals can push you forward.
Tangible Results: Measurability lets you see your progress and know when you've succeeded.
Resource Efficiency: Knowing your specific goal helps you better allocate time and resources.
Accountability: Measurable and time-bound criteria keep you accountable for your progress.
Tips for Setting SMART Goals:
Always write your goals down; it reinforces commitment.
Review and adjust. Goals might need tweaking or changing as circumstances change.
Share your goals with someone who can offer encouragement and hold you accountable.
Celebrate your achievements, both big and small.
Challenge: Set a personal SMART goal for the coming month. Draft a brief action plan outlining how you'll achieve it. Review and adjust as necessary.
Challenge of the Week
Can you keep all of your meetings to 30 minutes or less. I like this practice and teach it to all of my students in my Web2 job. Consider cutting all interactions that are important to 30/m. All interactions that are not cut to 15/m max. This includes unproductive Twitter spaces.
