Kardashev Scale
The Kardashev Scale, proposed by the Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, ranks civilizations from Type I to Type III, with hypothetical extensions to Type IV and Type V by other researchers. Here's a brief rundown:
Type I Civilization (Planetary Civilization): This civilization is able to harness and store all of the energy available on its home planet. Earth hasn't reached this level yet, but we're currently estimated to be around 0.72-0.73 on the scale.
Type II Civilization (Stellar Civilization): This civilization can capture and control energy at the scale of its entire star (like building a Dyson Sphere around the sun). It would have mastery over its whole solar system.
Type III Civilization (Galactic Civilization): A civilization that controls the energy of an entire galaxy.
The term "Type 0 Civilization" is not a formal classification in Kardashev's original scale but has been used colloquially to describe our current civilization, which is still in the process of transitioning to a Type I civilization. A Type 0 would be characterized by its dependence on fossil fuels, limited space capabilities, and geopolitical divisions.
