Don't Let Wealth Define Our Visionaries: A Reminder for My Community
Everywhere we turn, we're bombarded with stories about the Zuckerbergs, the Bezoses, and the Musks of the world.
These men have undoubtedly shaped the way we communicate, shop, and even think about space and transportation. But let's pump the brakes for a second and talk about something important: just because someone is wealthy doesn't automatically make them a visionary that we should follow without question.
Why We Look Up to the Wealthy
Visibility: When you're wealthy, you're in the public eye. Whether we want to or not, we're constantly hearing about these individuals, making it easy to consider them as role models.
Impact: Ain't no doubt about it; these folks have had a substantial impact on our lives. But we have to remember that many people contribute to those changes—not just the guy whose name is on the company.
The Success Story: Many of us in minority communities know the struggle, so a rags-to-riches story speaks to us deeply. But we've got to remember that these stories are often more complicated than they appear.
The Concerns We Need to Address
Wealth Ain't Virtue: Being rich doesn't automatically make you wise, moral, or visionary. Don't forget that luck, timing, and, yes, privilege, play a massive part in anyone's success.
Who's Accountable?: These folks ain't elected leaders. They don't answer to us in any real way, so why should they be setting the agenda for our future?
Limited Perspective: Let's be real. The lives these individuals lead? They're galaxies away from the struggles of many in our community. What they consider to be a problem and what we see as problems can be vastly different.
Watch for the Hustle: Just because they've got a platform doesn't mean they're always using it for the greater good. Don't let their 'visionary' status fool you into thinking they can't exploit it for personal gain.
What We Should Do Instead
Diversify Our Heroes: Let's celebrate the teachers, community activists, artists, and everyday people who are making a real difference in our lives and communities. They may not have billions, but their impact is priceless.
Think Critically: Just because someone's wealthy or in the media doesn't mean they have all the answers. Take the time to question, investigate, and form your own opinions.
Accountability: Support systems and leaders who answer to the community, not just their bank accounts or shareholders.
I'm not saying we can't admire or learn from those who've been financially successful. But let's make sure we're keeping a critical eye on the narrative. Not all that glitters is gold, and not all visionaries have a billion dollars in the bank. Sometimes, they're right in our own community, offering us the most valuable vision of all: one that includes all of us.
