What are Public Goods?
In economics, a public good is a product that one individual can consume without reducing its availability to others and from which no one is excluded. Economists refer to public goods as being non-rivalrous and non-excludable.
Characteristics of Public Goods
Non-rivalrous: This means that when a good is consumed, it does not reduce the amount available for others. In other words, one person's consumption of the good does not prevent or limit others from consuming it.
Non-excludable: This means that no one can be effectively excluded from using the good, whether or not they have paid for it.
Examples of public goods include clean air, public parks, and lighthouses.
The Free-Rider Problem
The free-rider problem is a key issue with public goods. Since these goods are non-excludable, individuals may be tempted to enjoy the good without contributing to its provision or maintenance. This could lead to under-provision of the good, as providers may lack the funds or incentive to provide the good in the first place.
